Patala / Trichosanthes cucumerina
In Ayurvedic and Siddha texts, Patola is revered for its therapeutic properties, being classified as a Shaka (vegetable), having a cooling, light, and slightly bitter quality.
The cultural significance of this plant extends beyond medicine, as it is integrated into many regional cuisines and dietary practices. It produces a distinctive long, serpentine gourd that symbolises both nourishment and balance.
In rural India, snake gourd is grown in many household gardens, reflecting its accessibility and deep-rooted connection to daily life. The vegetable’s unique, elongated shape and versatility in dishes like curries, stir-fries, and soups highlights its role in promoting health through diet. The use of Patola as an offering, in some rituals, underscores its symbolic value, as well as being a life-sustaining plant. Its prominence in Tamil cuisine sees its use in the seasonal consumption of Patala, which is believed to align the body with natural cycles, as well as promoting health.
Patala has been documented by both Caraka and Sushruta, where it is described as a tri-doshic balancer, particularly effective in pacifying Pitta and Kapha doshas, due to its cooling and light nature. Patola’s bitter and astringent tastes aid in detoxification, improve digestion and help reduce inflammation. Patala seeds are rich in proteins and fats, its leaves highly medicinal, and while the gourds high water content makes it hydrating and ideal for cooling, during the hot season. In addition, its light and drying properties make it effective for conditions like obesity, sluggish digestion, and respiratory issues.
In Siddha pharmacology, Patola is often combined with other herbs, such as turmeric or neem, to enhance its efficacy in managing chronic conditions like diabetes or jaundice.
